Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most meaningful milestones and capturing those early days with professional newborn photography ensures that those precious moments are preserved forever. One of the most common questions parents ask is, “When should I schedule my newborn session?”
At Leah Islinger Photography, I specialize in timeless, luxury newborn photography for families in Appleton, Little Chute, and the surrounding Fox Cities area.
The best time to schedule a newborn photography session is between 12-17 days after birth. During this short window babies are typically sleepier and more easily posed and they naturally curl into those womb-like positions. Their skin also tends to be smoother, with fewer temporary blemishes This is the timeframe when those soft, peaceful, curled-up portraits you love are most easily achieved.
Ideally you should book your newborn session sometime during your pregnancy. Most clients schedule during their 3rd trimester but many also like to schedule during their 2nd trimester.
At Leah Islinger Photography, I accept a limited number of newborns each month to provide a personalized, luxury experience for every family. Booking early ensures that your due date is reserved on my calendar & that your session can take place within that ideal 12-17 day window.
Scheduling early also gives us time to discuss styling, colors, and details. If you have a specific theme, prop or outfit request, the specialized vendors that I order from often have a 4-6 week turnaround time, so booking early will give me ample time to be sure your session has everything that you want!
Newborn sessions are held in my studio which is located in Little Chute, WI, and I proudly serve families throughout Appleton, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Combined Locks, Neenah, Menasha, Oshkosh, Green Bay & the greater Fox Cities area.
Families looking for a newborn photographer in Appleton, WI or the Fox Cities often book months in advance to secure their spot.
If your baby has already arrived, it’s still worth reaching out. I always try to accommodate last-minute availability when possible.
Babies under 3 weeks old are still an ideal age for newborn-style posing.
Babies in the 3–6 week range can still often be posed the same as in those earlier days, they may just take a little more time to soothe to sleep and may possibly be less bendy & curly so I will just pose as they allow.
Babies older than 3-6 weeks can still be documented in a more relaxed, lifestyle manner.
Every stage is worth documenting, just with a slightly different approach.
This is by far the most common reason. Many first-time parents don’t know that newborn sessions are best within the first 1–2 weeks and that photographers book based on due dates.
Between appointments, planning, and just feeling exhausted, booking photos can fall to the bottom of the list.
Some families prefer not to plan too far ahead, especially with so many unknowns around baby’s arrival.
Budget plays a role, and some families, understandably, take time to decide if professional newborn photography is something they want to prioritize.
Even well-planned sessions can get thrown off by a multitude of reasons.....
If baby spends time in the NICU or needs monitoring, sessions are often delayed and that’s completely okay.
When NICU stays are involved I always, always tell my client not to waste a single second worrying about their session. If you session is already booked, send me a quick email letting me know & from there I will wait to hear from you to reschedule. Focus on your baby and once you have a going home date, or once you are settled at home, get in touch with me and we will reschedule your session date.
And babies can simply arrive later than expected - little stinkers!
Birth recovery (especially after a C-section or complications) can mean waiting until mom feels physically ready.
Newborns change so quickly in their first few weeks. Capturing them early allows you to preserve those tiny fingers & toes, and their delicate little features. Those early days are when they are at their squishiest, and the curled up, womb-like stage fades so quickly
These are the details that pass in the blink of an eye, but photographs allow you to hold onto them forever.
Every newborn session with Leah Islinger Photography is designed to be calm, baby-led, and a relaxed experience for parents. My newborn sessions are thoughtfully styled with soft, timeless tones and also personalized to each client.
You don’t need to worry about a thing....I guide you through the entire process so you can simply enjoy the moment.
The best time to schedule your newborn photography session is before your baby arrives, with your session taking place within the first two weeks of life. Planning ahead ensures you don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime stage. But it’s also okay if you didn’t book ahead of time, reach out anyway & we will plan the perfect session for you!
If you’re expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Appleton, WI, Little Chute, or the Fox Cities, I would love to create something beautiful for your family.
