One of the most common questions I hear from moms-to-be is “When is the best time to schedule my maternity session?” The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all but knowing how your body changes week by week can help you choose the perfect window for stunning, comfortable, and flattering photos.
If you’re planning maternity photos in Appleton, WI, or the Fox Valley area, this week-by-week guide will help you feel confident in your timing and get the best results from your session.
Most photographers, including myself, recommend scheduling between 28 and 34 weeks. Here’s why.....
- Your bump is beautifully defined – the shape is noticeable but not too heavy for posing
- You’re usually comfortable – less fatigue and swelling than the final weeks
- Variety is still possible – you can move, sit, and pose comfortably
Scheduling in this window ensures your photos capture your pregnancy at its most flattering and photogenic stage.
24–27 Weeks:
- Bump may be just starting to show
- Great if you prefer a smaller, subtle belly look
- Poses may feel easier, but you may lose some of the “full bump” impact
28–30 Weeks:
- The bump is defined but you’re still very mobile
- Perfect for outdoor sessions or those planning more dynamic poses
- Energy levels are generally higher
31–34 Weeks:
- Bump is prominent and beautifully round
- Ideal for dramatic, flowing gowns and close-up belly shots
- Some poses may feel less comfortable, but careful planning ensures great results
35+ Weeks:
- Your bump is at its largest, creating stunning, full-bodied images
- Energy may be lower, and posing can be more challenging
- Best suited for studio sessions or shorter, relaxed shoots
Timing isn’t just about weeks; it’s also about the season.....
-Spring/Summer: Long days and golden-hour evenings are perfect for flowy, ethereal looks outdoors
- Fall: Cozy textures and warm tones shine among fall foliage
- Winter: Indoor or studio sessions work best to avoid harsh weather, and neutrals create a timeless aesthetic
Planning around both your week of pregnancy and the season ensures your session is comfortable and visually stunning.
