Planning your maternity session should feel exciting, not overwhelming. With the right preparation, your photos will feel natural, beautiful, and truly reflective of this special season.
If you're searching for maternity photos in Appleton, WI or the Fox Valley area, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
Your outfits play a huge role in the final look of your images.
Flowy dresses, fitted gowns that highlight your bump, and soft neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully. Think creams, warm browns, soft pinks, and earthy tones.
Avoid busy patterns, logos, or neon colors, as they can distract from the emotion of the image.
I offer a client closet for all of my maternity sessions to make things easy and stress-free for you. It’s filled with beautiful gowns, bodysuits, and simple, flattering pieces that photograph so well and really highlight your bump.
If you’re not sure what to wear (totally normal!), don’t worry, I’ll help you put everything together, so you feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful.

One of the most overlooked details? What you wear underneath.
Seamless, neutral undergarments help create a smooth, flattering silhouette and prevent distractions in your photos. Strapless bras and high-waisted underwear are especially helpful for maternity gowns.
If you’re planning to wear any sheer or semi-sheer pieces from the client closet, it’s important to be mindful of what will be visible underneath. These fabrics photograph beautifully, but the right undergarments make all the difference in keeping your look clean and seamless.
For darker pieces (especially black gowns), I recommend bringing black undergarments. For lighter or colored pieces, nude tones or undergarments that closely match the color of the gown will photograph best.
That said, some clients choose to forgo undergarments altogether depending on the look they’re going for. Professional editing can be used to refine and soften any visible details, allowing for a more natural, elevated finish while maintaining your comfort and vision.
If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you decide what will work best with your selected looks so everything comes together effortlessly.
If you want that polished, glowing look then professional hair and makeup is highly recommended.
Makeup for photography is slightly more defined than everyday wear, helping your features stand out while still looking natural. Plus, it allows you to fully relax and enjoy your session.
Your hands will naturally be a focal point in maternity photos.
Clean, shaped nails with neutral tones (like nude, blush, or French tips) help keep your look timeless and cohesive.
If your rings still fit, don't forget to bring those as well!
Adding a few personal touches can make your session even more special.
Consider bringing an ultrasound photo, tiny baby shoes, a special blanket or lovie, or jewelry with sentimental value.
Keep it simple and choose items that enhance, not overwhelm.
The best time for maternity photos is typically between 28–34 weeks.
At this stage, your bump is well-defined, and you’re usually still comfortable enough to move and pose with ease.
A little self-care goes a long way.
Stay hydrated, moisturize your skin, and avoid tight clothing right before your session to prevent marks. Rest is just as important as it shows in your photos.
In Appleton and the Fox Valley, seasons play a big role in how your maternity session looks and feels, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to outdoor photos.
From golden summer evenings to cozy fall tones or clean, minimal winter sessions, each season offers something unique. And when the weather isn’t ideal (or you simply prefer a more controlled environment), studio sessions are a beautiful alternative.
