Why I Don’t Offer Outdoor Family Mini Sessions

Why I Don’t Offer Outdoor Family Mini Sessions | Green Bay & Appleton Family Photographer

Every fall when photographers start announcing mini sessions, I usually start getting messages asking if I’ll be offering outdoor family mini sessions too.

In the past I did offer these sessions, but I stopped last year. It has nothing to do with thinking mini sessions are 'bad.' They absolutely work for some photographers and some families. They’re just not the kind of experience I want to provide for my family photography clients.

After photographing families for many years, I’ve learned that the best family photos almost never happen in the first five minutes.

Kids Need Time to Warm Up

Some kids jump right into photos with huge smiles from the second they arrive.

Others need time to observe me from a safe distance first. Some want to explore the location. Some cling to mom for the first little while. Some decide they absolutely do not want photos taken… until suddenly halfway through the session when they realize we’re just hanging out and having fun.

That’s normal.

One of the biggest reasons I don’t offer outdoor family mini sessions is because I never want families feeling stressed about the clock. Parents can feel pressure when they know they only have 10 or 15 minutes to get 'perfect' photos before another family is waiting behind them.

Kids pick up on that stress immediately.

When sessions feel rushed, everybody feels rushed.

With full family sessions, there’s room to breathe a little. If a toddler needs a snack break, if somebody needs a few minutes to reset, or if we need to spend extra time getting kids comfortable, we can do that without panic setting in.

And honestly, those slower moments are usually when the genuine smiles happen anyway.

Pets Need an Adjustment Period Too

The same thing applies when dogs are part of the session.

Most pets need a little time to sniff around, check out the new environment, and get some excitement out before they’re ready to focus on photos. Trying to rush a dog into sitting perfectly in an unfamiliar location within the first two minutes usually doesn’t go very smoothly.

Giving pets a little extra time almost always leads to a calmer, more successful session.

Good Lighting Matters

Lighting is a huge part of my photography style, especially for outdoor family photos.

I schedule sessions during the best lighting conditions, usually near sunset, because that softer evening light creates the warm, natural look people often see throughout my portfolio.

With outdoor mini sessions, photographers typically have to stack multiple families back-to-back in one evening. That can mean some families are photographed in gorgeous golden light while others end up in harsher lighting simply because of timing.

I personally want every family to have the best possible experience and the best possible light.

Full Sessions Allow for More Natural Photos

Of course, we’ll still get the smiling-at-the-camera photos grandparents love, but some of my favorite images usually happen in between those moments.

Kids laughing.
Parents cuddling their babies.
Siblings being goofy together.
Kids running happily through a field.
Everybody finally relaxing enough to stop thinking so hard about the camera.

Those moments are hard to create when everybody feels like they’re racing against the clock.

Full sessions also give us more variety overall, individual photos of the kids, sibling photos, full family images, candid moments, movement, snuggly photos, and more personality throughout the gallery.

Older Kids Need Time Too

People often assume only little kids need time to warm up, but honestly teenagers usually do too.

I photograph a lot of school-aged kiddos, preteens, and families with older kids, and most people become noticeably more comfortable as the session goes on. By the middle of a session, everyone usually stops overthinking things and starts acting more naturally.

That’s when the best expressions and real connection start showing up.

Every Family Is Different

Over the years, I’ve photographed shy kids, strong-willed toddlers, neurodivergent children, nervous parents, energetic dogs, and families who were convinced ahead of time that their session was going to be a disaster.

Almost every single one of those sessions turned out beautifully because we allowed time for everyone to settle in naturally.

I never want parents leaving a session feeling like their child 'failed' because they didn’t smile on command within a tiny time window.

Family photography should not feel stressful.

I Do Offer Christmas Mini Sessions

While I don’t offer outdoor family mini sessions, I do offer Christmas mini sessions in my studio each year.

Studio Christmas minis work really well in a shorter format because the lighting is controlled, the setup is already prepared, and weather isn’t a factor. Families aren't looking for the perfect family wall portrait. They're usually looking for a smaller set of fun holiday photos or an updated family picture for cards.

Those sessions have become one of my favorite yearly traditions.

My Approach to Family Photography

At the end of the day, I want family sessions to feel relaxed, personal, and genuine.

I want kids to have fun.

I want parents to stop stressing.

And I want your photos to actually feel like your family instead of a rushed checklist of poses.

The best family photos usually happen after everybody stops worrying about getting the perfect photo.

I'd love to have your family in front of my camera!
